Hedgehogs are unbelievably cute. While you’d never want to come into contact with their quills (yup, cuddling isn’t likely) their compact form and button eyes give them an overall charismatic appeal. However, lately, the internet has been focusing on one unexpected hedgehog feature — their butt. And in particularly their butts while they’re sleeping
Yup, there are irreverent snoozing hedgehog butt pictures everywhere. And they’re hilarious. All prickly parts and dangly pink legs. Here’s more about how these hedgehog butt photos have gone viral.
An Online Post Explodes
For the record, it’s amazing in and of itself that so many people have access to hedgehogs and, in connection, to hedgehog butts. What is equally amazing is just how cute their behinds are and how much the social media trend has exploded.
The social media trend started when a video was posted of a hedgehog that was fast asleep. The fat, defenseless animal was sprawled out on his belly with its butt showing and its legs to each side. Then the animal’s owner does something that’s as unthinkable as it is irresistible — they poke it in the butt. Check out the video for yourself:
Once you see the post, it isn’t hard to see how it gained so many reactions. The poor animal’s response is priceless and understandable. Who wouldn’t pull their legs in that quickly when poked?
Not only did the video go silver when it was posted on Reddit, but it was copied to a lot of other social media forums too. Lots of people made jokes such as a Redditor named StunnedJack said, “Why don’t you come and have a seat over here.” Another Redditor, tapasandswissmiss asked the obvious question, “did he consent to that?”
Fan Reactions Are Priceless
As the video became more popular, fans showed another unexpected reaction, they started to post snaps of their own hedgehogs. Photo after photo appeared of sleeping hedgehogs.
While a few of them showed hedgehogs in generally adorable, relaxed poses, many of them mirrored the slumbering pose of the original video. Their pet was on their backs, legs sprawled and completely out. As with the original video, most of the sleeping hedgehogs are in what appear to be their burrows, a soft, plush, pillow-like bed to sleep in.
Hedgehogs As Pets…Who knew?
While this video trend is adorable in and of itself, it also reveals another unexpected fact. Hedgehogs are a fairly popular pet and rank right up there on the cuteness scale with just about any other cute pet you can imagine.
As it turns out, the hedgehog ownership model for a specific breed of the species, the African pygmy hedgehog, came into full force in the ’90s and hasn’t lost that much steam. They’re not only exotic and unusual, but they’re docile and relaxed too. Unless you poke them in the butt!
It’s worth noting that there are some things about hedgehog pet care that should give people pause. The pets aren’t exactly low-maintenance. They’re nocturnal animals and need to be exercised at night when humans would rather be relaxing. In addition, if they’re not socialized properly a hedgehog can get upset and hurt their caretaker. They’ll use their quills painfully and they’re not afraid to bite.
Experts warn the risks and commitment to hedgehog ownership are real. If you’re charmed by the animals and their adorable sleeping butts, but not up for the work, maybe a hedgehog stuffie is more your style. There’s plenty of them. And you can still enjoy all the amazing online pics of social media’s new obsession.
