Humane Society International Saves Hundreds From South Korean Puppy Mill
Dog farms are a hot button issue. These farms are extremely common in South Korea, though some want to see them shut down, citing abusive practices and inhumane conditions. Others believe cultural differences should be respected. Why are these farms so controversial? A recent rescue gives us a clue.
Terrible Living Conditions
More than 200 dogs were rescued from a particularly terrible dog farm in Hongseong, South Korea. The rescue was carried out by Humane Society International.
Dogs of all ages and sizes were packed into cages that were too small to house so many dogs. Bowls of food and water were left for the dogs, but many of them were empty.
Too Cold For Survival
Winters can be very cold in Hongseong. Lamps were placed in and around the metal cages, but that did very little to keep the dogs warm. Many of the dogs also had injured paws because they spent their entire lives standing on metal grating.
These dogs were living in a puppy farm owned by an unnamed farmer. The farmer’s first priority was to sell the dogs as pets. That is why he had so many sought-after breeds such as Chihuahuas, poodles, and huskies. Dogs that didn’t sell quickly as pets were killed and sold as meat.
Pets Or Platters
There is very little regulation against puppy mills in South Korea, and the dog meat trade is completely legal. Dog meat is becoming a less-popular dish in South Korea. When dogs don’t quickly sell as pets, puppy mills can get backlogged with too many dogs.
For this particular farmer, selling the dogs as meat was seen as a last resort because it was less lucrative. Humane Society International paid the farmer under a 20-year agreement that he would release all his dogs to the group and stay out of the puppy industry until the end of the contract. The puppy farm has been put out of business. All the rescued dogs are receiving medical care and will hopefully be adopted into loving homes.
