Woman Forced to Deliver Own Baby During Hurricane Irma

While everyone was hunkering down and preparing for the worst damage Hurricane Irma could bring, one expectant mother was busy delivering her own baby.

At around 3:30 AM, police received a distressed call from a woman who was refused to be named. The call came from a pregnant woman in the Little Haiti neighborhood, just on the outskirts of downtown Miami.

She told the dispatcher that she was already in labor and that she needs help. However, rescuers were not able to get to her because of the strong winds brought by Hurricane Irma.

At around 5:35 a.m. she again called 911 saying that she was about to give birth.

In a stroke of genius, the dispatcher connected her call to the Paramedics and a doctor from Jackson Memorial Hospital. The mother then received instructions on how she was to go about giving birth on her own.

According to Assistant Fire Chief Eloy Garcia “we weren’t able to respond. So she delivered the placenta, also dispatch told her to tie it off. She’s stable at home.”

The City of Miami also tweeted about the incident on twitter which received more than 1,000 likes and 700 retweets. “@CityofMiamiFire couldn’t respond to woman in labor in Little Haiti. @JacksonHealth docs talked her through birth at home—it’s a girl!”

After the strong winds subsided, both the mother and child were taken to Jackson Hospital to receive further medical attention. Both the mother and child were healthy and are doing just fine.

During that same time the City of Miami received 41 distress calls but they were able to respond only to 3. This was due to the strong winds and very low visibility during the hurricane. Miami-Dade Police Department has earlier announced that they may not be able to respond to emergency calls and cautioned the residents to stay inside their houses.
