Woman Endures Mystery Illness For Years Until Home Contractors Discover The Truth
Kathi Wilson was just an ordinary mom and wife from Indiana, working and taking care of her family. Then tragedy struck when she became severely ill. She thought that she had a common cold or flu, but then it lasted for an unusually long duration. No one was able to help Kathi, and nothing she did seemed to help. She was mostly bed-ridden until one day when she found out what had been ailing her from a very unlikely source — a group of home contractors. Thanks to these strangers, Kathi eventually learned the truth. Her story could also save your own life one day.
1. The Victim
Kathi Wilson, 41-years-old, was a native resident of the small town of Shelbyville, Indiana, just outside of Indianapolis. She enjoyed a quiet life with her husband and children. She also had a good job working for the Department of Motor Vehicles.
Kathi always was a happy go lucky kind of person, never letting anything too small get to her. But little did she know that all of that was about to change. That was because of the mystery illness that would leave her partially crippled and in misery for years. Her condition seemed all the more perplexing given her life leading up to this point.
2. Healthy Living
Kathi Wilson had always led a pretty healthy lifestyle, she was by no means a health nut or an exercise guru, but she ate right for the most part. She made sure that she and her family ate a balanced diet. Due to eating right and exercising, she rarely got sick.
That’s why it was so surprising when she fell ill one day about 10 years ago. Being ill just didn’t fit with Kathi due to her healthy lifestyle. And even on the rare occasion that she would get sick, she would recover quickly. But not this time, this time was very different.
3. Just A Common Cold
It all happened very suddenly, one day, Kathi woke up just feeling exhausted. She felt weak and ill, like her entire body was run down. This was very unusual for the likes of Kathi, but still she didn’t think too much about it at the time.
Kathi figured that her sudden feelings of exhaustion were something very common. She figured that she had either come down with a common cold or perhaps the flu at worst. But little did she know that something much worse was going on, something that could potentially kill her. At the first sign of sickness, Kathi initially had an inclining as to why she had fallen ill all of a sudden.
4. Stressed Out At Work
While Kathi Wilson indeed enjoyed her job at the DMV, she knew that she had been a bit stressed at work recently. She had been putting a lot of time and energy into her work just before she started to feel sick. And she was having difficulty keeping up with everything that was going on.
Kathi was struggling to keep her home life and her work life separate. In light of her personal situation, she simply thought that she had fallen ill because her immune system was weak because of all the stress. But pretty soon her family started to worry that this wasn’t just a passing cold.
Kathi’s family started to really worry about her. It just wasn’t like her to be sick for so long. As the days went by, she just kept feeling worse and worse. Kathi brushed off her family’s concerns, thinking that she would start to feel better any day.
But every day she would wake up feeling weaker and more lethargic than the day before. And worse yet, the illness was starting to have an affect on her daily life. She started to find that she couldn’t keep up at work or her family life. At this point she didn’t know what she was going to do.
6. Mystery Illness Symptoms
The most confusing thing to Kathi was her symptoms. She had experienced them all before, they were symptoms of the common flu virus, but the illness just wasn’t passing. In the past, her symptoms had cleared up within a couple of days of when hey started, but not this time.
Kathi felt fatigued 24/7, her entire body was sore, she had a cough and had lost her voice. But this was no ordinary flu, as she would soon discover. Eventually, she started to get fed up after learning that her ailment wasn’t going to go away easily on its own. So she resigned herself to take matters into her own hands.
7. Trying To Help Herself
Not one to pity herself, Kathi Wilson mustered the energy to go to the drug store. There, she stocked up on all the medications that she could possibly need. She got cold and flu medication as well as vitamins and other nutrients to help boost her immune system.
In most cases, such measures would be enough to help fight off the common cold or flu. But that was only assuming that Kathi actually had a common viral or bacterial infection, not something much graver and potentially life-threatening. As she continued to get worse, though, she eventually made herself a doctor’s appointment.
8. Nothing Helped
The more Kathi tried to fight the illness herself, the worse she ended up feeling. The symptoms kept getting worse and worse. Kathi hoped and prayed that a medical professional would be able to determine what exactly was wrong with her and why she was feeling so poorly. But then she actually saw the doctor and things changed suddenly.
She was hopeful that the doctor would know exactly what was wrong with her and would be able to help her facilitate a speedy recovery. But that’s not quite how things went down. In the end, the doctor was little to no help at all.
9. Perfectly Healthy
In spite of all the hoping and praying, the results of the doctor’s examination of Kathi were a complete shock to her. The results turned up normal. According to his checkup, Kathi was perfectly healthy. Something just didn’t add up. If she was perfectly healthy then why did she feel so terrible? And if she was feeling so terrible, why weren’t there any physical signs?
As the doctor’s office explained that there was nothing physically wrong with her, her claims of some mysterious illness were dismissed. Her doctor recommended that she take some time off work to get some rest as Kathi had been stressed at work, but there was no concrete evidence of any specific ailment. Kathi took the doctor’s advice, but found the outcome quite disappointing.
10. Following The Doctor’s Orders
Kathi followed her doctor’s advice to a T and made sure to give herself plenty of time for her body to recuperate. By this point the illness had plagued Kathi for weeks and she was getting restless, needing to know what was going on with her body and what to do to resolve it.
But for some strange reason, it seemed like the more time that Kathi spent at home, the more severe her symptoms became. She had been following the doctor’s recommendation, but her efforts seemed to be having the exact opposite effect on Kathi’s body. So she decided that she would return to the doctor for a more thorough examination.
11. Additional Testing
Kathi’s doctors were more than happy to perform numerous tests to try to get to the bottom of her ailment. Medical professionals booked Kathi for blood tests, heart tests, EKGs, MRIs, cat scans, and spinal taps to check for every possible disease they could think of.
Again, Kathi Wilson was hopeful that the doctors would be able to get to the bottom of her illness. And with them performing so many tests and scans you would think that something would show up in the results to indicate that something was off, right? Well, that is not exactly what happened, as you’re about to find out.
12. No Answer
It didn’t take long for all the test results to come back, and to everyone’s dismay, they were inconclusive. Nothing medically wrong showed up in the plethora of tests and scans that Kathi underwent. All the thorough testing did was prove was that Kathi was completely healthy from a medical perspective.
The testing also showed that Kathi didn’t have any allergies or disease that could explain her symptoms. She was devastated and felt hopeless. The entire medical team was certain that they would be able to get to the root of the issue, only to be baffled by the medical test results.
13. The Mystery Illness Takes Its Toll
Undoubtedly upset and angry that she didn’t have the answers that she needed, Kathi became more and more emotional as the days passed. Every day her condition seemed to worsen and pretty soon she wasn’t even able to walk in her own home unassisted. “The more I stayed home, the more I slept, the more I got sick,” she said.
Kathi took to using a cane to get around the house. And leaving the house soon became out of the question. But still, to make matters worse, the more she was in her home, the worse her condition seemed to get. She then became housebound, barely able to move from one room to another. The entire family tried their best to help out, but Kathi’s condition was rough on all of them. “I felt like an 80-year-old woman stuck in a 40-year-old body,” she said.
14. Despairingly Undiagnosed
Can you imagine suffering from an undiagnosed disease, one that seemingly no doctor can help you with? That is exactly what Kathi Wilson was dealing with and unfortunately, her affliction would last far longer than anyone could have initially foreseen. No doctor was able to help her and no one could understand why.
Kathi had been suffering for so long that she nearly gave up hope. She realized first hand just what it means to have a life-altering disease. However, when she first fell ill, she had no idea that it would only be by a stroke of luck from a kind stranger that she would be able to discover what had been plaguing her.
15. Living With The Mystery Illness
The weeks and months passed, still Kathi was ill with the same ailment. No one could figure out what it was so at some point Kathi resolved herself to simply living the best she could even with the symptoms. Years passed and Kathi didn’t improve. She had to put up with her condition for an incredible amount of time until she finally reached a turning point.
Ultimately, Kathi ended up living with her mystery illness for about a decade. For 10 years she tried to manage as even the most basic everyday tasks had become incredibly difficult for her. Her situation wasn’t any easier when her husband and daughter contracted chronic bronchitis and bouts of pneumonia. But it wasn’t until she and her husband coincidentally made a seemingly commonplace decision that the learned the terrifying truth that would explain the family’s ailments.
16. The Remodel
In an attempt to try to keep their house up to date, the Wilson family decided that the time had come for them to renovate their bathroom. Everyone thought that it was a great idea and would bring some life and rejuvenation into the old house.
So, Kathi hired some local construction workers to do the job. Little did she know at first that those same construction workers would end up saving her life when even her own doctors could not. It was when the construction workers started to take a look around the bathroom that they noticed something that was terribly wrong with the house.
17. Something The Doctors Missed
There wasn’t something only terribly wrong with the house though, there was something deadly wrong. When contractors Doug Tucker and brothers Evans and Luze Duran first showed up to the house they started to look around at exactly what they would be dealing with. And that’s when they heard it.
They heard that the mother of the household, Kathi, had been sick for over 10 years already. The construction workers, of all people, quickly realized why she had been feeling so bad for so long. It was because of the house. All along, through all the medical tests and scans, nothing had detected that the house itself was the culprit the entire time.
18. The Mystery Illness Solved
None of the doctors had even thought to test for it. But the construction workers dealt with it all too frequently and knew its deadly powers. In order to complete their bathroom remodel, they had to go to the furnace and disconnect the water heater. And that’s when they saw it.
The pipes connecting the water heater to the furnace had been fitted improperly, causing a leak into the entire house. To the horror of the home’s inhabitants, it turned out that for more than 10 years, deadly carbon monoxide had been silently and lethally leaking into the Wilson’s family home.
19. Getting Back To Normal
Immediately after finding the problem, the contractors told Kathi about the leak in the furnace. She immediately knew that that was the reason behind why she had been feeling so bad, and why staying in the house always made it worse. Kathi had been suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning the whole time.”This actually was the worst I’ve ever seen,” said contractor Luze Duran.
The construction workers fixed the leaks in the improperly fitted pipes and almost immediately, Kathi started to feel better. She noticed a difference immediately and she was ecstatic. She hoped that she was finally back on track to return to her normal day-to-day life without the suffering. Kathi hadn’t felt so good in about an entire decade and not just physically. But her story wasn’t over.
20. Mental And Physical Recuperation
Now that the leak was fixed, Kathi could start getting back to her old self. Kathi was finally able to start the road to recovery and return to the person that she was before the debilitating affliction struck. Mentally, she was still exhausted but she knew that it was just a matter of time before she was back to normal.
And she was right, it wasn’t long at all before Kathi Wilson was back to her happy go lucky attitude and loving life again. She did still have a slightly hoarse voice, but she was happier than she had been for the entire past decade. In fact, there was one emotion that she was overwhelmed with.
21. Feeling Grateful
Kathi made an incredibly fast recovery from her illness and of course, she wanted to thank everyone who had helped her throughout the years. Even though the doctors and medical staff were unable to identify the issue, she still wanted to thank them for their time and patience.
But the people who she wanted to thank the most were, of course, the contractors who quite literally saved her life. If the Wilson family hadn’t decided to remodel their bathroom, and the contractors had never shown up, Kathi’s life may not have turned out the same. “They were my angels. They brought me back to life,” Kathi said of the contractors. With her newfound take on life, Kathi wanted to try to help others just as she had been.
22. Paying It Forward
Once Kathi has recovered from her once mystery illness, she wanted to make sure that what happened to her did not happen to other people. And if faced with the silent threat of carbon monoxide poisoning, that others will know what to do and how to fix the issue.
Kathi said that she hoped other people won’t be and aren’t currently suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning without knowing it and suffering for years, or even decades. If anything can be learned from Kathi’s story, it’s that taking care of your home safety is just as important as taking care of your health, because one can certainly affect the other. Learning about the warning signs that crept past the Wilson family for so long could potential help save others.
23. Sounding The Alarm
Modern homes are required to have carbon monoxide alarms in the United States and most other countries. And that was no exception for the Wilson family. They indeed had a carbon monoxide detector in their home, attached to the ceiling as is common in many homes. However, the family ultimately learned the valuable lesson about the most effective placement of such detectors.
Due to the fact that carbon monoxide is heavier than air, the ceiling unit was not able to detect the carbon monoxide that had been leaking into the house for all those years. Detectors are also made to insert into your electrical outlets, that way you can place them closer to the ground. It was a lesson that Kathi had to learn the hardest way possible. And as winter approaches, it’s critical for homeowners to be aware of the best method for preventing carbon monoxide poisoning.
24. CO Poisoning
In order to detect carbon monoxide, you must have a carbon monoxide detector. Carbon monoxide has no smell, taste or color. And as we have learned from Kathi Wilson’s story, you should have a detector close to the floor as well as on the ceiling.
As carbon monoxide is denser than air, it will sink to the floor. There is a reason why carbon monoxide is called the silent killer. As winter approaches, please make sure to test your detectors and if need be, buy a new one to place near the floor. The source of carbon monoxide leaks is most commonly from furnaces, fireplaces, generators, clothes dryers, and other appliances.
