Kids Can Drive In Stylish Toy Cars To Their Surgeries At This Hospital
Surgeries are scary ordeals, especially for kids. To help abate such fears, the Doctors Medical Center in Modesto, California came up with a fun and creative idea to help calm the nerves of their young patients. With fancy toy cars, the hospital staff lets kids to roll on to their surgeries in a fly ride!
Arriving In Style
The hospital center introduced a black toy Mercedes for young patients in their pediatric surgical program. The kids could drive around the floor to their surgeries for a fun moment beforehand. “The goal is to reduce anxiety and stress and make the experience less scary for everyone involved,” the hospital told PEOPLE. The idea was so popular that the hospital added another choice for their young “drivers.” An employee along with family donated a pink toy Volkswagen Beetle for the kids to drive. “Doesn’t hurt to have options, right?” the hospital shared.
Lap of Luxury
Kids find comfort in the one-seater cars, which are complete with a stereo, an MP3 player, and preloaded music. They can operate the music manually or by remote control.
The cars also have doors that open, working headlights, as well as back-up and dashboard lights. Of course, these special features make the kids feel great as they head into their operations. Who wouldn’t want to roll into surgery in a fine automobile?
Doing The Research
Pre-op nurse Kimberly Martinez came up with the idea after doing some research and finding that the cars had a positive impact on patients. It puts minds a little bit at ease for the kids and the parents. “When the children find out they can go into the operating room riding in a cool little car, they light up, and in most cases, their fears melt away,” a rep from the hospital stated. “In addition, when parents see their children put at ease, it puts them at ease as well.”
A video of a patient taking a spin in the pink Volkswagen Beetle has acquired 50,000 views to date. “It’s wonderful to see a smile instead of worry/fear,” Facebook user Angela McBurnett said. What’s even greater about this story is that several people have now offered to donate a few more cars to the center. The hospital encourages anyone with a donation to send an email.
