Man Forgets About Lotto Ticket For 5 Months, Then Decides To See If He Won…

If you were in the running to win almost $2 million, you’d probably be eagerly waiting to find out if you happened to have the lucky number. One man in Colorado took a much more casual approach to things.

No Rush

Because he prefers to scan several tickets at once, our mystery winner from Denver did not take his lottery ticket from November 2017 in until April 2018. It was as he was scanning his tickets, he got a surprising message to “Claim at Lottery.”

Of course, he did what any rational human being would do. He immediately did a little research, only to discover that he was the winner of nearly $2 million. “I immediately logged into the mobile app and checked my numbers for that date. I was completely stunned,” he said.

His Lucky Day

The total jackpot was just a modest amount of $1,996,761. Imagine sitting on a small fortune for about five months, completely unaware. “I never thought it was going to be me,” he said. To be fair, no one thinks it’s going to be them.

In the end, our winner opted for the lump sum amount of $983,380. What are his plans? He intends to save, pay a few bills, squirrel some away for retirement, and “have a little fun.” Sounds like a solid plan.

The Odds

It turns out there are other stories similar to this one. The winner didn’t know or realize that they’d won big. Or they managed to come across a winning ticket someplace. But what happens if a potential winner never figures out they’re sitting on a winner?

According to the Colorado Lottery site, if you don’t claim your winnings within 180 days, the money gets donated. So we’d recommend keeping an eye on your tickets. You could be next.
