No one enjoys working at a job they hate. It’s frustrating, stressful, and it can often harm your mental health to work in a hostile environment. Eventually, many individuals decide to leave the job for something better. That’s what happened to Sam Baines of Sheffield, United Kingdom, who decided to leave his job at a call center in July 2019. He figured his boss would be heartbroken to lose him, so he left his employer a special note when he resigned. His boss probably didn’t expect to receive this humorous farewell card.
Leaving His Job For Something Else
Sam Baines had worked at the call center for over a year when he decided he needed another job. The 22-year-old resigned so he could finally attend university and receive a formal education. He didn’t want to work at the call center his entire life. He hoped for a brighter future for himself. But he couldn’t leave his job without a final prank.
Baines was lucky to work in an environment with fellow pranksters. Unlike other individuals, Baines was close to his coworkers. They formed a strong team, so it was hard to move on from the job. Baines commented, “We are a really close team and have a fantastic manager, so we’re always joking around and having fun. I knew I had to do something a little more creative when giving my notice to try and get one more joke in before I left!”
Sorry For Your Loss
Baines thought of the perfect joke. As he told his boss he would be resigning in July 2019, he left her a condolence card. The card read: “So very sorry for your loss. My last day at work is the 28th of July. Thinking of you at this difficult time.” Some employees would be concerned about how their boss would react to a card like this, but Baines was never worried. He knew his boss would find it hilarious.
“I knew my boss would find it funny, so I wasn’t worried about how they’d [his team] take it,” Baines said. “I came up with the idea because I was always joking about how much they’d miss me when I was gone, then thought a condolences card would be the perfect way to finish it.” Baines later added that his entire team laughed at the card and it helped make a sad situation so much better. His team was sad he was leaving, but they appreciated the good laugh.
One of Baines’ colleagues, Hannah, remarked, “Everyone was laughing and was pretty amused with the card. It was done in good spirit and not as a petty reaction as some people think.” In fact, Hannah decided to share the card on social media. But she probably wasn’t expecting the post to become a viral topic.
Making Others Laugh
Hannah shared the post on June 27, 2019, and it quickly went viral on Twitter. Since then, the post has gained over 400,000 likes and 76,000 retweets. People can’t stop laughing at the hilarious card, with many wishing they had thought of this card when they were resigning from their job.
One user (@gr1seldablanc0) said she would have added: “My thoughts and prayers are with you and the ENTIRE department as you ATTEMPT to move on.” Another user (@Kinniska) said she was “so shamelessly stealing that” idea. We don’t blame her.
Other Twitter users shared their own versions of the viral post. Baines isn’t the first person to resign from a job with a creative twist. Some people [like user @kkkkkrista23] baked cakes announcing the news. Another user (@kevinankelle) left a box of Krispy Kreme donuts with his resignation letter inside the box, along with the words: “I quit.” No matter how you decide to resign from your job, Baines has encouraged others to have fun with the announcement.
