Maroon 5 Donates Their $500,000 Super Bowl Fee To Help Kids Across The Country
American pop rock sensation Maroon 5’s recent Superbowl halftime show was definitely a memorable one. The group was set to make a nice sum of cash from the show— $500,000 to be exact. However, they decided that it would be better if the fee went to a great cause instead.
Signing The Deal
It was announced by the NFL in mid-January that the pop-rock band would headline the Pepsi Super Bowl LIII Halftime Show at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Sunday, Feb. 3. Atlanta native and hip hop star Big Boi and rapper Travis Scott would also join them for the performance.
None of the artists participated in a customary press conference. Instead, the football organization issued a statement of its own. “Maroon 5 has been working hard on a Pepsi Super Bowl LIII Halftime Show that will meet and exceed the standards of this event,” the NFL said. “As it is about music, the artists will let their show do the talking as they prepare to take the stage.” Though they stayed mum about their performance, the band was open about what they planned to do with their big paycheck for the show.
A spokesman for the group confirmed that Maroon 5 had collaborated with the NFL and Interscope Records to donate the $500,000 to Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (BBBSA). “Playing the Super Bowl has been a dream of our band for a long time,” lead singer Adam Levine shared. “We thank the NFL for the opportunity and also to them, along with Interscope Records, for making this donation to Big Brothers Big Sisters, which will have a major impact for children across the country.”
A spokesman for the BBBSA confirmed that the donation would be connected to the NFL’s #InspireChange social justice initiative. Another $500,000 was donated to the Dream Corps social justice nonprofit after Scott negotiated a deal to perform for the show if the NFL agreed to join him in the joint donation. With these donations, the performance became a moment of charity, giving back to kids and communities across this country.
Hitting The Stage
Maroon 5 graced the stage at halftime for Super Bowl LIII as scheduled. Throwback songs during the 13-minute show included ” Harder To Breathe,” “She Will Be Loved,” “Girls Like You,” “Sugar,” and the more recent “Moves Like Jagger.” Big Boi performed his hit track, “The Way You Move,” while Scott performed his song, “SICKO MODE,” for the audience.
The performance also included Atlanta musicians Equinox Percussion and the Voice of Atlanta gospel choir. There was even a brief video clip from Spongebob Squarepants in memory of the series creator Stephen Hillenburg, who died in November at age 57 following complications from ALS. Though the actual show got mixed reviews, what matters most is that the performance is ultimately for a greater cause. Kudos to Maroon 5 and all involved!
