Mom’s Creative Back-To-School Idea For Her Son Goes Viral
Many parents love to take photos or videos of their kids on the first day of school each year. It’s nice to have those memories to look back on. Young mom Carina Cansino wanted to remember and celebrate her son going off to school too. However, she came up with a unique idea to commemorate those special moments. Now, her cute back-to-school idea is going viral with different parents praising her creativity and even trying it themselves!
First Day Flicks
Carina’s son Gus was preparing for his first day of kindergarten. Of course, the mom was ready with her camera but came up with a fresh way to remember these firsts all the way through high school graduation. Carina bought an oversized t-shirt and had “Class of 2032” printed on it. Of course, it’s quite a few years away but it’s when Gus will cross the stage to get his high school diploma. On the back of the shirt, there was space for each grade from pre-K until high school. Carina came up with the idea last year when Gus was in pre-K. The goal is to have Gus put his handprint on the shirt for the first day of school each year as he grows up. She then posted the picture on Twitter for her followers to see their tradition. “The concept is that every year on the first day we take a picture of him in it and by his senior year he will fit in the shirt and we’ll get to go through every school year photo and watch his growth,” the mom tweeted.
Carina’s post quickly went viral, gaining over 35,000 retweets, 219,000 likes, and encouraging comments from all over the world. In fact, many were hoping that the mom would continue to post the pics each year so that they could see the final result. “Why am I getting excited to watch him grow up?” Twitter user @Zuuzuux asked. “If Gus says at any point that he’s too old for this, you better tell him his entire twitter family is waiting on the picture,” @kenyita_ joked. “Oh my, it’s so AWESOME!!!” @LadyMortiana, a teacher from Poland, shared with Carina. “Pass a hug to your wonderful young man, straight from a teacher from Poland!! And a reassuring word that it’s going to be a great adventure.” Other users revealed that they did something similar for their kids and siblings. One big sister got her six-year-old brother a Harvard university freshman shirt which she states he’ll wear until he gets his own acceptance letter into the school. One mom even shared a picture of her daughter Ava who will be in the same graduating class as Gus.

For Carina, she simply hopes that Gus will be the one to appreciate the t-shirt and tradition as he grows up. “I wanted something that my son and I could enjoy not just now, but when he becomes an adult. I’m a sucker for keepsakes and sentimental valuables, so I know this would be perfect,” she said in an interview with Insider. “I know one day we’ll both look back at all the photos and cherish all the great memories. It’s the best part of being a mom.” In addition to the shirt, the mom is also writing a special journal that she will give to Gus when he graduates from high school. In it, she is sharing stories, memories and the hardships that they have overcome together. “I was a teen mom, and my son has been my drive for all my accomplishments. I want him to see how much of a blessing [he’s been] to me,” Carina shared. With the huge popularity of the t-shirt, Carina is also now selling custom t-shirts just like her son’s to other parents who want to make the same memories with their kids. She also plans to create videos on YouTube to share her experiences as a young single mom to encourage others as well.
