Seeing your ex get with someone new is never easy, especially if you share a child. It’s easy to become jealous, insecure, or even angry. One 24-year old Virginia mother found herself in just that situation, but decided to rise above the pettiness. This is the story of how Audrey Loving taught her daughter about acceptance and love by embracing her ex’s new girlfriend.
Her Ex Started Dating Someone New
Audrey Loving had been with Corey Henry since she was 18-years old. They got engaged and had a daughter, Riley, who is now four. Unfortunately, the stresses of maintaining a long-distance relationship brought things to an end. Today, Audrey has full custody of Riley, but Henry often sees her on weekends.
When Corey started dating someone new, Audrey was understandably nervous. She had never met the new woman, Whitney, and didn’t know much about her. Still, she was determined to make the best of the situation for her daughter’s sake.
The Product Of A Broken Home
In an interview with Today, Loving explained, “I come from a blended family — I have stepsisters, half-sisters. Growing up, I heard the negative talk about the ‘other woman,’ and I didn’t want my kid to hear the same thing … It’s not fair. Kids are smart.”
When Audrey found out that Henry was dating someone new, she was determined to set a different example than the one she had grown up with. She also felt empathy for Whitney, who was thrust into a parenting role with a child that was not her own.
The High Road Paid Off
Instead of creating drama, Audrey decided to take the high road. In a now-viral Facebook post, the mother thanked her husband’s new girlfriend. The note read, in part: “This is my daughter’s father’s girlfriend. The sweetest thing ever! I’m super thankful for her because when she visits her dad she feeds her, takes care of her, buys her gifts, and basically takes care of her like her own.”
Loving’s post quickly racked up over 9,000 shares and 2,000 comments, and those numbers are still growing. Many women commented that they are in similiar situations and praised the mom for her kindness, when so many others might have chosen hate.
