Nine-Year-Old Applies for NASA Job and Gets a Response

When NASA posted an online job listing for a “Planetary Protection Officer”, they received plenty of applications. One, however, stood out from the rest. A nine-year-old boy named Jack Davis sent an application letter, which melted the hearts of those at NASA.

Jack’s letter was handwritten that contained specific reasons why he should be the next “guardian of the galaxy.”

He started off the application letter by saying “Dear NASA, my name is Jack Davis and I would like to apply for the planetary protection job. I may be nine but I think I would be fit for the job”. One of the qualifications Jack listed is that his sister thinks that he is an alien himself.

He also explained that “I have seen almost all the space and alien movies that I could see”, which according to him also included the movie series “Marvel Agents of Shield”. He plans to watch the movie “Men in Black” sometime soon to add to his portfolio.

Aside from watching alien and space movies, Jack noted that he is good at video games. His most desirable trait, however, is his youth. Jack wrote that  he is “young, so I can learn to think like an alien.”

NASA was very amused by Jack’s letter that they sent him a letter in response. Dr. James L. Green, Director of Planetary Science Division wrote: “I hear you are a Guardian of the Galaxy and that you are interested in being a NASA Planetary Protection Officer. That’s great”.

Dr. Green continued to explain the position was for someone to keep microbes from outer space out of earth and vice versa. Although Jack did not get the job as he was still too young for it, Dr. Green gave him advice that would certainly give him a boost.

Dr. Green said: “We are always looking for bright future scientists and engineers to help us so I hope you study hard and do well at school. We hope to see you here at NASA one of these days!”
