The Original Fyre Festival Pitch Is Both Tragic And Hilarious
It was the dumpster fire we couldn’t tear our eyes away from. The now infamous Fyre Festival, a botched music festival in the Bahamas in April of 2017, gained worldwide media attention for selling a luxury weekend full of jet skis and supermodels that turned out to be more like a refugee camp. Now, the original pitch to investors has leaked and the promises are downright laughable. Also, “ideate” is technically a word, but it also sounds like they made it up.
The Fyre Festival was such a disaster— even though it’s been a year and some change, we still find it entertaining. Founders Billy McFarland and Ja Rule’s epic fail has inspired not one but two documentaries, oodles of jokes, and some classic memes.
Originally, Nick Bilton of Vanity Fair shared the presentation in May of 2017 but lately, it’s gotten a second wind.
Reimagining The Music Festival
First, the presentation dares investors to shake up the concept of the musical festival: “What if we reimagined what it means to attend a music festival?” Reimagined, like throwing elbows to claim a soggy mattress under a Hurricane Katrina tent?
After a few puns using fire—Fyre and fire—the slides move along to mention the A-list festival promoters, a lengthy line-up including Kendall Jenner, Emily Ratajkowski, Bella Hadid, Hailey Baldwin, Ashanti, and more people who apparently did not know what kind of hoax they attached their names to.
Seek Those Who Light Your Flames
Next, the deck highlights their brand strategy and shows a sweeping aerial view of Black Point Exuma, with a note explaining, “Fyre has been given $8.4 mm of market value land on the Black Point Exuma in exchange for hosting the festival and advertising the island.” As we all learned later, nobody was giving anybody any land, and nobody was really concerned about toilets, either.
Last, the Fyre founders leave us with an inspirational quote from mystical poet, Rumi: “Seek those who light your flames.” Well, there are also flames in a dumpster fire. Just a little something to make you smile today.
