How The Photos In One Tweet May Help People Figure Out They Have Astigmatism
Do you ever think you might see things differently than others? That your vision might not be quite right? While only a doctor can tell you for sure, a recent viral Tweet has been cluing people in on the fact that they may have a common vision problem called astigmatism.
Simple Set Of Photos Tells A Lot
A simple set of snapshots on the Twitter feed ‘Unusual Facts’ compared what people see when they have astigmatism versus what things look like when their eyes are working correctly.
Astigmatism is when the cornea is slightly curved rather than completely round..
With astigmatism, light focuses on several points of the retina rather just one point. This is what people with Astigmatisms vs without. pic.twitter.com/RXWWayFBRJ

The two photos show a lot of blurriness and distortion on the side that represents what individuals suffering from the eye disorder experience. The corresponding photo is clearer, without the streaks and blurred sections.
A Surprise For Social Media Followers
Unexpectedly, the tweet was an eye-opener (pun intended) for a lot of people who saw it. Some even had a hard time believing that the photos were real, assuming that everyone saw the world in the same streaky way that they did. Others nicely questioned whether the photos were accurate.
Could the first picture be capturing the curvature in the front windshield rather than a biological defect? I’ve seen this light streaking effect whenever my wipers are running, and the aligned trail of water alters the headlights in front of me.

The response from online followers goes to show how much everyone assumes that their view of the world is the same for each other person. This is true even when their outlook is caused by something different in how part of their body functions.
What Is Astigmatism?
As part of this feed, social media followers were able to gain a better understanding of how the eye works and of what astigmatism actually is. As the post explains, the condition occurs when the cornea or the lens inside the eye has non-symmetrical curves.
The condition can be common and, if you suspect you may have it, should be properly diagnosed by your eye doctor. The good news is that it is easily treatable. Glasses, contact lenses, and refractive eye surgery can easily return vision to its normal state.
