Matt Grodsky and Laura Scheel met when they were just three-year-old preschoolers. No one could believe it, but the pair formed an incredible bond and were inseparable from the moment they met. Their parents, teachers, and friends were aware of their unique bond, but no one believed anything could become of it at such a young age. Matt even made a special gesture in front of the entire class one day, but everyone just laughed at him and brushed it off. Eventually, Matt and Laura would move on and leave those memories in the past. That is, until many years later when they would realize they were living a completely unbelievable reality.
1. Cutie Patooties
Matt Grodsky and Laura Scheel first crossed paths when they were just tiny tots. They both attended a preschool in Phoenix, Arizona, and from the moment they met one another, they became the best of friends.
When Matt spotted Laura Scheel on the playground, he was immediately drawn to her. Other than thinking that this young friendship was really adorable, their parents and teachers didn’t give much thought to it. This didn’t stop the pair from forming a tight bond ― a bond that would lead to something completely unbelievable when everyone least expected it.
2. Two Peas in a Pod
At first, Laura thought Matt was a total goofball as he would just follow her around the playground all day. However, when she got to know his infectious and hilarious sense of humor, she became just as hooked, and the rest was history!
Laura and Matt did everything together. They simply loved chasing one another around the playground playing hide-and-seek and staying up during nap time to giggle and get up to mischief. It all seemed pretty innocent for such small children, but no one could have anticipated what would later unfold.
3. Field Trips
Matt and Laura became simply inseparable. Laura would always pick Matt as her partner on field trips to places like the public library, as it was guaranteed that he’d make her laugh. The little preschoolers even held hands.
It wasn’t enough to see each other at preschool; the two also planned play dates and went to the movies together, where they would grab each other’s hands during scary scenes. It was very clear that Matt and Laura were inseparable, but no one believed these two could maintain such a close bond. Matt, however, was of another opinion and would prove it by making a striking gesture in front of the whole class.
4. Love Birds
Despite their tender age, Matt constantly tried to impress Laura with several preferred methods of flirting. His best tactic was to recite catchy lines from Disney’s movies, particularly The Lion King, to get Laura’s undivided attention.
Matt also tried to impress Laura during a Cinco De Mayo celebration by breaking opening the piñata. Laura, on the other hand, taught Matt how to swing, how to draw rolling hills, and how to eat string cheese. The teachers thought their bond was incredibly sweet, but they weren’t prepared for what Matt was about to do.
5. Young Love
Everyone knew that Matt and Laura were the best of friends. They were attached by the hip and created the sweetest memories together. However, it seemed like this bond went beyond friendship. In fact, Matt and Laura were little love birds, as far as that definition applies to three-year-old kids.
Matt truly believed it, which is why he stood up in front of all his preschool classmates and declared that he would marry Laura one day. “Just you wait,” he exclaimed! His peers burst out laughing at his heartfelt declaration. How could anyone take him seriously at such a young age? While Matt might have been way off with his prediction, not even he could anticipate what would happen years later.
6. Preschool Sweethearts
No one took Matt’s words seriously, but this didn’t stop him and Laura from remaining as close as ever for the rest of preschool. They attended each other’s birthday parties and set play dates almost every week.
The tiny tots almost seemed destined to be together, even at such a young age. It was very rare for such young souls to share such a unique bond. However, this bond would soon be put to the test.
7. Off to Kindergarten
Matt Grodsky and Laura Scheel’s parents couldn’t believe the time had come to send off their beautiful children to kindergarten. For most parents, their babies grow up too fast, and it was no different in Matt and Laura’s case.
It seemed obvious for Matt and Laura to attend the same kindergarten. After all, who could even think about separating such close friends? Well, as it turns out, their parents had different plans for the two preschool sweethearts.
8. Christmas Cards
When the time came to send Matt and Laura to kindergarten, their parents sent them off to separate schools. It wasn’t deliberate, but it was clear that each set of parents wasn’t really aware of just how close their kids really were.
It wasn’t easy for them, but Matt and Laura continued to see one another sporadically until around the year 2000, when the time came to embark on a totally new chapter: elementary school. This would prove to test their friendship even further.
9. Love From A Distance
When several more years passed and it was time for elementary school, Matt and Laura lost touch completely. Gone were the days of play dates and hide-and-seek. They were going through the motions of growing up and didn’t really have much time to mull over the changes.
For the next seven years, the only way the preschool sweethearts kept in touch was through their parents’ annual Christmas cards. The annual photos of Matt and Laura tracked their development, but they were nothing really substantial for the two to maintain a friendship. Matt Grodsky and Laura Scheel never really forgot one another, but they didn’t think much of the past anymore until something unexpected would occur several years later.
10. Out of Sight, Out of Mind
As Matt and Laura navigated their way through elementary school, the annual Christmas cards started to matter less. Neither of them eagerly waited to see a picture of the other attached to the card as the years unfolded. It seemed the proverbial saying was true: out of sight, out of mind.
The former preschool sweethearts were forging new friendships and making new memories, so it was only natural that Matt and Laura starting thinking less about one another. This, however, would eventually change due to an unbelievable circumstance that neither could have foreseen.
11. High School Freshmen
Elementary school had come and gone, and both Matt Grodsky and Laura Scheel were moving on to their freshman year of high school. Their preschool days were lodged far back in their minds as they both embarked on the most exciting stretch of their schooling so far.
Once again, the two long-lost best friends joined different schools, so it seemed very unlikely for them to renew contact or to cross paths again. Life went on as normal until one day, in the fall of their freshman year, Laura looked through her friend’s phone and could hardly believe what she saw!
12. Blast from The Past
One day, Laura was innocently scrolling through her friend’s phone and happened upon Matt Grodsky’s name in the contact list. She couldn’t believe her eyes and asked her friend how she knew Matt and why she had his number.
It turned out that Laura Scheel’s friend had attended middle school with Matt. When Laura made the connection, she told her friend about her and Matt’s preschool romance. Laura decided it was best not to put much thought into it, but her friend had an outlandish idea!
When Laura Scheel’s friend heard that Matt and Laura had been preschool sweethearts, she knew she had to act. She told Laura that she wanted to set her up with Matt again, but Laura was slightly wary and hesitant at first.
“I was a freshman in high school so I was like, ‘I don’t think so!'” Laura told People. Despite Laura’s reservations, her friend went right ahead and gave Matt her number so they could reconnect. Laura was nervous about it all as so many years had passed, but nothing could have prepared her for Matt’s reaction.
14. Rekindled Love
Soon enough, Laura received a text from Matt about meeting up. They agreed to meet up at the movie theater and it felt like no time had passed at all. In fact, Matt told People that the chemistry was still there and it was again love at first sight. They hit it off right away.
The attraction was instant and strong, and within two weeks of meeting, Laura and Matt were officially dating. It was challenging being at different schools, but that didn’t stop them from dating throughout high school and attending one another’s school dances. They weren’t in the clear, however, and still had more hurdles to overcome ahead.
15. Rethinking Things
Matt and Laura went on dates almost every weekend during high school. They were inseparable; just like they had been in their preschool days. Soon, however, it was time for college, and everything was going to get trickier again.
“Right after we graduated from high school, we were pretty hesitant,” said Laura in an interview with People. “We were like, ‘Do we stay together? Do we try to make it work.'” It was time for Matt and Laura to rethink their relationship because, once again, they had enrolled at different institutions. This time, however, they would be in different states!
16. Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fonder
Laura Scheel enrolled at Northern Arizona University while Matt moved more than 1,600 miles away to Chicago to attend Columbia College. It wasn’t an easy decision, but seeing that the couple had so much practice at a somewhat long distance relationship during their high school years, they hoped nothing would come between them.
They didn’t want a repeat of their separation after preschool, so they decided to stick it out by figuring out a schedule to see one another as often as possible. They used FaceTime and social media to stay in contact and even visited one another’s campuses. Nothing could keep these lovers apart, even the distance. But nothing could have prepared Laura for what Matt would soon do.
17. Soul Mates
Matt and Laura remained resilient about staying together during their first year of college. The longest stretch they had to spend apart was 20 weeks, but they still managed to maintain their relationship and enjoy the authentic college experience.
It was very clear to Matt and Laura that they were soul mates and meant to be together from the moment they met in preschool. This time, though, Matt didn’t want to wait to see what time had in store for them. The distance was starting to get to him.
18. Another Milestone
Despite all the long weeks spent apart, Matt Grodsky and Laura Scheel’s first year of junior college went by super quickly. It was then when Matt decided he needed to do something he should have done long before; something that could change the course of his and Laura’s life.
Their senior year of college was around the corner, but Matt wasn’t going to let anything stand in his way any longer. He wanted to surprise his love with the most special idea, but he couldn’t have anticipated that what he was about to do would make headlines.
19. A Celebratory Picnic
Matt wanted to surprise Laura with a sweet and romantic gesture to mark the completion of their junior year of college. A celebratory picnic immediately came to mind, so Matt got down to business to spoil the love of his life.
“I convinced Laura that we were going to a picnic at the preschool. We had just finished up our junior year of college, so I framed it as a nice relaxing date,” Matt told Huffington Post. Little did Laura know that there was so much more to this picnic than Matt was letting on.
20. Emotions are High
Laura wasn’t aware that Matt was taking her to their preschool playground to have the picnic. He really believed it would be a symbolic moment to celebrate their beautiful relationship and unique love story, which had all started right there.
The whole car ride to the preschool Laura noticed that Matt looked very anxious and fidgety. Sure, he wanted to surprise her, but she couldn’t understand what could be so nerve-racking for him. That was because she had no idea where they were going and wasn’t aware of what else Matt was planning that would have everyone in tears.
21. Marry Me!
When Matt and Laura arrived at the surprise destination, Laura was in complete shock. She thought they were just there for a picnic, but then suddenly, Matt got down on one knee and asked Laura to marry him!
Obviously, the answer was a resounding ‘YES,’ but Laura was so overwhelmed with what was happening. “I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, is this happening?’ I saw the ring and was like, ‘This is gorgeous. I’m so happy with it.’ I had no idea,” she exclaimed to People. Matt gave her his pitch on why he wanted to marry her and she loved it, but she wanted to know how he managed to plan everything without her even suspecting a thing?!
22. The Plan
Matt proposed to Laura on May 23, 2015. Incredibly, he had already purchased the engagement ring after receiving her dad’s blessing two months prior. He even stationed his own brother at the preschool before they arrived so he could capture footage of the entire proposal. The reason he was fidgety during the drive there was because he kept checking his pocket for the ring.
What’s more, Matt also organized the picnic basket his own father had used to propose to his mother and filled it with snacks, wedding dress magazines, and sparkling cider. That wasn’t the only surprise Matt had for Laura, though.
23. The Preschool Pledge
Matt didn’t want to wait until after college to propose to his preschool sweetheart. He decided to stay true to his preschool pledge. “I proposed to her at the place it all began … our preschool classroom,” Matt proudly recalled to Huffington Post.
He went on to say that “When you like someone, you just kind of stand up and say it.” This is exactly what Matt did in preschool and again 20 years later, and it made the proposal all the more symbolic. What happened next, though, became a total news sensation.
24. Tying the Knot
On December 30, 2016, preschool sweethearts Matt Grodsky and Laura Scheel tied the knot at the Arizona Historical Society, proving that true love really does exist. To merge the nostalgic past and the celebratory present, they chose “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” by Elton John as the song for their first dance — a blatant nod at Matt’s many Disney one-liners.
Matt’s uncle also officiated the wedding and described Matt and Laura’s relationship eloquently, saying: “For most kids in preschool, it’s about finding your snacks and your sleeping mats, but for them it was about finding their soulmates.” Still, Matt and Laura’s love story didn’t just end here.
25. A Meaningful Moment
The wedding was special for Matt and Laura for obvious reasons, but it was more about celebrating with their loved ones and commemorating their special love story. “Our favorite part of the wedding was the dancing and having everyone we love there to celebrate with us,” the happy couple told People.
“We tore it up on the dance floor and it was great being surrounded by everyone who played a part in bringing us together,” they added. After the wedding, the happy couple jetted off to a romantic honeymoon in Maui, but Laura wanted to share their incredible story with the world, and she had a perfect idea. What she didn’t know yet was that there were more surprises waiting for her.
26. A Touching Request
Soon after Laura became a Grodsky, she wanted to share her and Matt’s beautiful story with the world. That’s when Matt posted about their heartwarming preschool sweetheart story on the Instagram account “The Way We Met,” which recounts incredible stories of how different couples met.
Matt started the post explaining where it all started until the moment they exchanged vows 20 years later. “I was enamored with Laura as a child, and I still am to this day,” he declared. While they expected people to like their story, Matt and Laura could never have anticipated where it would lead.
27. The Response
The post garnered a fortune of likes and comments, which came as a bit of a surprise to Matt and Laura. They knew that he had written a play-by-play of their childhood adventures and high school reunion, but they didn’t expect people to love their story so much.
When they shared their story at first, it received 30,000 likes and 816 comments, but their story also gained wider attention through several media channels. “To us, it seems normal because we lived it and others think it’s an amazing story that you take for granted sometimes,” Matt said. “Having gone through a long distance relationship, you learn really quick how much the other person means to you and we value our time.” No one knew it yet, but the post would soon go viral, leading a big-name star to reach out to them with an astonishing offer.
28. Going Viral
The post then went dormant for a few months as the newly married couple renovated their new home, but then one day, Laura received a message from the Instagram account that their story had been spotlighted to an audience of over 392,000 followers.
Eventually, the famous actor and rapper Tyrese Gibson reached out to Matt and Laura. Admitting that he is a “sucker for true love,” Gibson offered the special couple a three-day trip to Miami. The former preschool sweethearts jumped at the opportunity and took up the gesture for a vacation. The couldn’t help but message Gibson while there to express their gratitude. Still, Gibson wasn’t the only one who took notice.
29. For Eternity
Their story of true love spread across the world like wildfire. “It’s totally insane. I’m eating a sandwich at work getting messages saying, ‘Hey, you’re in India!’ or ‘Hey, you’re in Paris!’ It spread like wildfire and we’re just glad to be a part of something positive around the world,” Matt told Huffington Post. “It’s just crazy.”
Laura sees the humor in it all saying, “It’s so funny to scroll through Instagram and think, ‘That’s my face.’ Our preschool photos are everywhere.” They also took this opportunity to share their favorite things about each other in the media and it was nothing short of touching. Matt loves Laura’s infectious smile and her kind nature, while she loves Matt’s sense of humor and his drive. But where are they now?
30. The Future
Since Matt Grodsky and Laura Scheel got married, life has been great. He works as a screenwriter and an account executive at a digital marketing agency and Laura works for a non-profit organization helping foster families in need. They also love cooking and exercising together along with looking after their precious pooch Kirby.
As for the future, Laura told People: “We would love to have kids at some point. Right now we are focused on our new puppy Kirby and our new house.” Now, this is what you call a fairytale love story!
