Taking A Girls’ Trip Can Boost Your Health, Scientists Say
The next time your man – or anyone for that matter – gives you grief about taking a girls trip, hit them with the facts. The facts being, outings with your girlfriends is scientifically proven to improve your mental state and well-being. Here’s how.
Newness Breeds Wellness
Trying new things is paramount in helping your brain stay active and happy. “When you seek novelty, several things are going on. First of all, you are creating new synaptic connections with every new activity you engage in,” Andrea Kuszewski, a behavioral therapist, told Forbes. “These connections build on each other, increasing your neural activity, creating more connections to build on other connections— learning is taking place.”
Those new experiences tell your brain to release dopamine, also known as the “feel-good hormone.” And once you start feeling good, you become more motivated and new neural connections are established. What better excuse do you need to hit that bucket list vacation destination with your closest gal pals?
Hormones And Your Home Girls
Not only do girls trips spark increase dopamine production, but another hormone takes center stage: oxytocin.
Oxytocin, also known as the “love hormone” is released when people snuggle or bond socially. This hormone works miracles in combatting unpleasant emotions like anxiety and depression. The release of oxytocin is also established as you build trust with your closest friends. Spa day, anyone?
Sisterhood And Your Social Life
Even if you can’t get away with your girls for a trip, a weekly or monthly girls night can do wonders for your health.
In fact, one study titled “Loneliness and Social Isolation as Risk Factors for Mortality: A Meta-Analytics Review” from 2015 examined data points from 3.4 million people who participated in 70 studies in total. The researchers found that participants who lacked social engagements developed the same health mortality risks of smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day. Yep, all the more reason to hit your girls up for happy hour tonight. Don’t thank us, thank science.
