This Japanese Man Bounced Back From Depression By Turning Into A Bodybuilder

Updated

on

What would you do if your wife left you unexpectedly? Most people would curl up in a ball of self-pity (and rightfully so), but not this man. When middle-aged Japanese man Shirapyon was suddenly abandoned by his partner, he did what anyone would do: pour himself a nice, stiff drink. Eventually, his despair transformed into motivation, and he decided to pick up dumbbells instead of the bottle. What happened next is an absolute miracle. Find out how this Japanese man bounced back from depression by turning into a bodybuilder.

Sudden Loss

At first, everything was going well for Shirapyon. He had a loving wife and virtually no reason to question his existence. That is, until his spouse stepped out on him. It was then that this self-described “bald, dumpy, middle-aged guy” received the wake-up call he needed to get his life back together.

After spending more than a few nights wallowing in liquor, he had an epiphany: bodybuilding. Yes, you heard that correctly. During an interview with Bored Panda, Shirapyon shared: “I divorced five years ago, and for a while, I was drinking only liquor. But then I remembered my youth suddenly. I thought that I’d like to participate in a bodybuilding contest.”

Back To Basics

Remembering his previous passion for working out, Shirapyon realized that he had to get back to basics. Soon after he started hitting the gym, he quickly regained his previous physique. He explained to Bored Panda that, “I lost weight in my own style, I lost 12 kilograms through diet and hard work at the gym. At my first contest, I did not qualify. But I loved the challenge and have now been competing in bodybuilding contests for 4 years.”

Once he got into the swing of competing, he was addicted. Nowadays, you can basically find him in the gym whenever he’s not busy at work. Not only that, but he’s constantly entering new bodybuilding competitions and earning high scores. Spending his days at his medical equipment job and his nights at the fitness club have worked wonders for Shirapyon’s spirit too. He dished to Bored Panda that, “I’m happy to be the cause from which someone’s change has begun. If you want to be reborn, do it while you’re still alive.” So true!

Sweet Revenge

Now that Shirapyon is living his best life, he’s found love with a new partner who appreciates him for who he is. Since he’s been married to his bikini model wife, things have definitely changed for the better. He told Bored Panda that, “I changed my body, and destiny was changed. It doesn’t have to be bodybuilding that creates the spark. It can be swimming, a marathon, any hobby. Anything that takes perseverance to improve oneself. I fight against myself, not others.”

If you’re ever feeling down on yourself, just remember Shirapyon’s motto: “Don’t make excuses until you’ve tried everything that you possibly can.” He’s living proof that you can do anything in the world if you just believe in yourself. In addition to his success as a bodybuilder, his active lifestyle has led to several modeling and commercial jobs as well. He’s even dabbled in cosplay as the Dragon Ball Z anime character Tien Shinhan. We’re proud of you, Shirapyon!

Social media response has been crazy supportive! His inspiring Twitter account, @ lonestarsde 66, has almost 7,000 followers and over 9,400 likes!

Instagram user @kitty_muning fangirled, “Your story is very inspiring.. Everything happens for a reason.. I’m glad you found your new ❤️!! Keep it up🙌”

Instagram user @grr8jon geeked out, “You’re amazing. I’m working out tonight 💪🏽 😊”
