During the COVID-19 pandemic, many countries have decided to slow down the spread of the coronavirus by imposing strict lockdowns and asking the residents to follow social isolation rules. Members of the public are asked to stay inside in order to ensure everyone is kept as safe as possible as the virus continues to take thousands of lives around the world. They are only allowed to go out for essential shopping and one exercise outing per day. While social isolation affects people in different ways, some have decided it’s best to spend the lockdown with those that matter the most, be it family or friends.
Meet Doreen Burns, Carol Spark and Dotty Robinson from Greater Manchester. The three lifelong friends have been through pretty much everything together and they are determined to tackle the pandemic in their own way. The over-70-year-old trio has decided to isolate together as the United Kingdom imposes stricter restrictions for the public. The decision was particularly welcomed by the government as they’re the age group that has been most affected by the virus. Isolating with your friends is a perfect way to combat loneliness and keep up the spirits.
The trio’s self-isolation plans
The trio spoke to BBC Breakfast where they happily revealed all their plans. They said they would spend a week in one of their houses and then move somewhere else. Together, they’ll binge-watch The Crown on Netflix (a solid choice), and drink copious amounts of wine. They’ll also exercise in their gardens and just basically do whatever possible to combat the COVID-19 lockdown.
The giggly ladies revealed they’ve been through absolutely everything together, including divorce and loss. In fact, they’ve been friends for over 40 years which is pretty impressive. And they don’t seem to be overly concerned about the lack of food supplies. They’ve admitted that the wine has been the only thing they’ve been panic buying during the pandemic. In a joking way, of course.
The trio also revealed the pros and cons of each house they own and how that will affect their social isolation plans. For example, Dotty has a back garden, which is perfect for exercising, Carol’s house has the wine, and Doreen has Netflix. Why worry about a pandemic when you’ve got friends like these!? The friends also told BBC Breakfast that they had plans to drink wine as soon as their interview was over – and they would’ve definitely shown their entire supply if they were asked to!
Doreen, Carol, and Dotty seemed extremely happy and cheery during their interview and we can only imagine the fun they must have together. They are an important reminder of creating lifelong friendships because you never know when an apocalypse may come. These three sound like a complete party and they’re definitely the people we’d want to spend our quarantine with. We do have at least one question though – can we join?
Check in on the elderly
Social isolation is particularly hard on the elderly. Make sure you check in with the elderly people in your life, especially those that may not get to be around company as lovely as Doreen, Dotty, and Carol. Although you should definitely practice social distancing, you can always give your elderly friends a call and tell them you appreciate them. And while you practice social isolation, don’t forget to wash your hands – germs can be found in some of the most surprising places in your household.
