Believe It Or Not, Drinking Red Wine Before Bed Will Help You Lose Weight
Wine lovers, rejoice! Your favorite drink to pair with dinner can help you shed a few pounds, according to science. Just drinking two glasses of red wine before going to sleep can help your body absorb a certain antioxidant that miraculously turns one type of fat into an active, energy-burning version of another.
Wine = Weight Loss?
Yes, we know. This sounds counterintuitive. Wine has calories, and excess calories are a no-no when it comes to dieting.
But, the science behind red wine’s weight loss properties is surprisingly solid.
Resveratrol To The Rescue
Thanks to a little something called resveratrol, red wine has the ability to turn white fat into beige fat. The difference? Beige fat is much more active and burns more energy. But what exactly is resveratrol?
Resveratrol is an antioxidant commonly found in fruits. It’s no wonder this grape-based elixir has what it takes to keep you looking lean.
The Science Behind The Vine
Don’t just take our word for it. Here’s what Min Du, a professor of animal sciences, has to say about resveratrol. “Polyphenols in fruit, including resveratrol, increase gene expression that enhances the oxidation of dietary fats so the body won’t be overloaded,” Min Du said. “They convert white fat into beige fat that burns lipids off as heat – helping to keep the body in balance and prevent obesity and metabolic dysfunction.”
Another study from Harvard found out of 20,000 women, those who drank two glasses of red wine per day were 70 percent less likely to have excess body weight. Resveratrol is also an appetite suppressant, meaning those midnight snacks will sound way less appealing after you drink your recommended bedtime wine. Moral of the story, you get to drink wine while its antioxidant properties turn your bad fats into better fats all the while keeping you from random snack temptations. Talk about a win-win-win. Cheers!
