Precious Yellow Possum From Australia Goes Viral For Striking Resemblance To Pikachu

You’re not going to believe us, but listen: Pikachu is real. She’s been spotted in Australia. Okay, maybe it’s a rare yellow possum. Still, we dare you to look at the pictures of this rare golden possum with pointed ears and tell us she isn’t the spitting image of Pokémon’s mascot.

Abandoned By Her Mother

All right, all right. So, she doesn’t have her own trading card and she’s never been to Japan. Turns out Pikachu is a common brushtail possum. What’s not common, however, is her vibrant, yellow coat. While usually brushtail possums have gray or brown fur, Pikachu lacks melanin. That’s what gives her fur the yellow-orange hue, or what makes her a “golden possum.”

The Boronia Veterinary Clinic and Animal Hospital (BVCAH) in Melbourne reported finding the rare, golden possum, whom they believe to be about five months old. They believe she may have fallen from her mother. A passerby took her to the hospital upon finding her, concerned she could not survive on her own.

Pikachu’s Progress

It’s important that the abandoned infant is now under hospital care. Her vivid coat, though unique, makes her stand out. She’s especially vulnerable to predators in the wild.

Despite being nervous at first, Pikachu received a clean bill of health from BVACH. Currently, she’s being fostered by a wildlife expert. The intention is to eventually set her back into the wild.

The Future Is Bright (Yellow)

The wildlife experts are watching Pikachu to determine whether the youngster will learn to survive on her own.

“If she becomes [a little] more out there and a bit feisty she might be released, but if she stays anxious she will remain in long-term care,” explained Dr. Stephen Reinisch.

Don’t worry, possum and Pokémon fans. If Pikachu isn’t scrappy enough to handle Tasmania on her own, she’ll spend the rest of her days in a wildlife refuge. Or maybe that’s what she wants us to think. Perhaps she’s training to take on other Pokémon for an epic battle to end all battles.
